BISNISTIME.COM, GUNUNG KIDUL – Thursday (03/10/2024) – The prolonged drought affecting Gunung Kidul, particularly in Mrico Hamlet, Ngestirejo Village, Tanjung Sari District, has caused a severe water crisis, impacting the daily needs of the local residents, especially for drinking and other essential purposes. In response to this situation, Lions Club Yogyakarta Puspita Mataram (LCYPM) took direct action by organizing a social service event to distribute 20 water tanks on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

Through this initiative, LCYPM provided clean water as an act of compassion towards the residents impacted by the drought. Project Officer, Lion Dwi Haroyah, explained that the choice of Mrico Hamlet as the recipient of this aid was not without reason. The hamlet has been severely affected by the drought, making access to clean water incredibly challenging. “We observed that the people of Mrico Hamlet are truly feeling the impact of this prolonged drought. Clean water is very difficult to obtain, so we decided to provide assistance here,” said Dwi Haroyah.

Eni Widiastuti, President of Lions Club Yogyakarta Puspita Mataram, also expressed her hopes through this social initiative. “This assistance is a form of our empathy towards the residents struggling to access clean water due to the prolonged drought. We hope that with the delivery of 20 water tanks, the residents of Mrico Hamlet won’t have to buy water for their daily needs. We sincerely hope this aid helps lighten their burden,” said Eni Widiastuti.

The residents of Mrico Hamlet showed great enthusiasm as the water tanks began to be distributed. The head of Mrico Hamlet, Supriyono, warmly welcomed the aid from LCYPM. He mentioned that there are around 200 households, totaling 600 residents, who heavily rely on external sources of clean water. “The clean water assistance from Lions Club Yogyakarta Puspita Mataram has been a tremendous help, especially for residents with limited financial means. Now, they no longer need to purchase clean water, which significantly eases their daily burdens,” said Supriyono.

Supriyono also expressed his deep gratitude to LCYPM for their attention and support to the residents of Mrico. “We are very thankful for the clean water provided. It truly alleviates our burden, particularly amid the economic challenges faced by many residents. We hope this drought ends soon, and the rains return, allowing our natural water sources to be replenished,” he added.

This social action received widespread appreciation from the local community, given that clean water distribution has become an urgent need during this prolonged dry season. Many residents of Mrico Hamlet have had to spend extra money to purchase clean water for their daily needs, especially for drinking. The assistance from LCYPM is expected to provide some relief to the local community until the rains come and natural water sources can be accessed again.

Lions Club Yogyakarta Puspita Mataram hopes that this activity serves as an example of social responsibility that others can follow, especially in addressing drought-related challenges and water shortages in affected areas. Through this tangible action, LCYPM aims to continuously contribute positively by helping communities in need and fostering good relations with the local population.

This social initiative by LCYPM highlights how solidarity and compassion can make a real difference for those in need, particularly in emergency situations like drought. It is hoped that this activity will inspire others to step forward and assist those facing difficulties due to the extended dry season, ensuring that basic needs such as clean water are met adequately.
